Building on Exposition
The Bible, rightly understood, is the foundation for everything we are and do—both individually and as a body of believers. We believe in the life-giving power of God’s Word (Psalm 1:1-3; 119:25). Through his Word, God not only creates and sustains his people but also grows the local church (1 Peter 1:23; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Therefore, the worship, ministries, and community life of Four Corners are built on the careful exposition of biblical texts, which essentially means preaching through books of the Bible.
Centering on Christ
As we build our identity and activity on biblical exposition, we focus on the Bible’s center and subject—God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We recognize that the Bible is God-centered not man-centered and that God’s glory is revealed in his Son (2 Corinthians 4:6). Therefore, we desire to preach Christ to one another (1 Corinthians 2:2; Colossians 1:28). Above all, we aim to be students of Christ’s person and work, believing that as we look upon his glory, we will be powerfully transformed into his glorious likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18). We believe that seeking to understand and apply Jesus Christ and him crucified must be at the heart of all corporate worship, discipleship, community life, family life, and evangelistic service.
Dying in Community
A person who knows and reflects Jesus Christ daily dies to self. In Christ’s Incarnation and Crucifixion, we find his self-giving love and service—the kind of life we believe he has called us to live (Philippians 2:5-11). One of Jesus’ most pronounced commands to his followers is to “love one another” (John 13:34; 15:12), and he says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). As we prayerfully and intentionally engage in Christian community, we strive to serve rather than to be served (Matthew 20:28), as we daily die to ourselves for the sake of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Serving on Mission
Jesus explained to his earliest followers that, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). This reminds us that Christian community does not exist simply for its own sake but to make God known to the world. Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” (John 20:21). This means that we are a community of love on mission. Our preaching Christ to one another and our dying to self in community naturally extend outward as we bear witness in the world to the love of God in Christ. As ambassadors of reconciliation, we bring the good news of the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-21). Just as our Savior served on mission (Matthew 20:28), we also serve those in our community and beyond while testifying to the salvation that is found only in him.
